Reading Buddies

Reading Buddys are a group of Upper KS2 children who support KS1 children with reading during lunchtimes in the library.

Each KS1 child is assigned a KS2 Buddy.  This means they will see the same child each time they come in to read allowing them to build up a relationship and a bond over time.  Twice a week Year 5 children take their Year 1 Buddy into the library for 20-30 minutes to read their home-school reading book together, as do the Year 6 Buddys with a year 2 child.  They spend some time reading the home-school reading book and then afterwards they choose a book from the library to share together, often with the older child reading to the younger child.

The Reading Buddys are given training after applying for their role on how to help and support emerging readers so they learn coach rather that tell the younger child what to do.  Children are selected to receive Reading Buddy support when they are not reading regularly at home.
