Kiwi
clubs are a partnership between Manchester Children's Fund,
Manchester UFA and 9 primary schools around the city from the
school improvement network.
The aim of this network was to explore different ways of
children learning and teachers teaching inspired by Alistair
Smith's work on accelerated learning. The Willows Primary
School is one of the networked schools. Children are expanding
their life experiences by attending a variety of after school
activities.
Kiwi
clubs aim to positively impact on raising attainment and
attendance by providing positive extended learning opportunities
for groups of children after
school
and at weekends. Kiwi clubs are underpinned by the
philosophy of the University of the First
Age which promotes
extended learning opportunities for children based on desire to
connect home, school and community and an unshakeable belief in
the potential to achieve success.
Corrina and Jane are
our Kiwi club co-ordinators. Corrina and Jane have a clear
focus and are fully trained in the delivery of this programme.
They assist the children in developing and planning activities
outside their normal school environment and operate a rigorous
monitoring process to ensure that the children have a tremendous
time as well as developing excellent life skills.
Children
who attend the Kiwi Club receive certificates, gifts and a
celebration party to acknowledge their achievements.
Parents/carers are welcome to attend.
The simple messages we have taken on board for the kiwi clubs
are:
-
To be effective
learning must be fun!
-
Learning will not take
place when the brain is in a state of stress. Everyone
needs to feel emotionally secure and safe.
-
Experiences which are
multi-sensory - unusual or emotionally strong are
remembered in more detail than routine experiences.
-
Learners are more
motivated when they have some control over their own learning.

The
children had a fantastic two days with our Dynamic Duo, Jane and
Corrina when they went wall climbing in Ardwick.
The
children from Baguely Hall and The Willows had a fun packed two
days and enjoyed I.T., Healthy Eating, Outdoor Fun and Circuit
Training.
